Why osteopathy during pregnancy?

Pregnancy changes everything — and your body deserves support.

In just nine months, your body undergoes one of the most extraordinary transformations a human being can experience. Your center of gravity shifts. Your ligaments soften under the influence of relaxin. Your spine adjusts to accommodate a growing baby. Your pelvis prepares for birth. Your organs reorganize to make room.

All of this is beautiful — and demanding. It's no surprise that 50 to 80 percent of pregnant women experience back pain, pelvic discomfort, or sciatic-type pain at some point during pregnancy. Many also struggle with heartburn, breathing restriction, sleep disturbances, or simply the feeling that their body no longer feels like home.

This is precisely where osteopathy can help. Gentle, hands-on manual therapy supports your body as it adapts — easing tension, improving mobility, restoring balance. It does not interfere with the medical care your obstetrician or midwife provides. It complements it.

Below, I've outlined everything you need to know about prenatal osteopathy — what it treats, what a session looks like, when to start, and how to know if it's right for you.

What prenatal osteopathy can help with?

Every pregnancy is unique, and so is every session. These are the most common reasons women come to see me — but the list is far from exhaustive. If you're experiencing something that doesn't appear here, please reach out.

Lower back pain & sciatica

As your belly grows, your lower back works overtime. Pelvic, lumbar, and sciatic pain are the most common complaints in the second and third trimesters. Gentle mobilization and soft-tissue work bring real relief — without medication, without manipulation if you prefer.

Pelvic & pubic pain (SPD)

Symphysis pubis dysfunction, sacroiliac joint pain, the feeling that your pelvis is "unstable" — these respond beautifully to gentle osteopathic care, especially in the second half of pregnancy.

Round ligament & abdominal tension

Those sharp, brief pains on the sides of your lower belly? Most often, they're round ligament strain. Soft myofascial release and visceral techniques can ease them significantly.

Heartburn, reflux & breathing restriction

As the baby grows upward, the diaphragm and stomach get compressed. Gentle work on the rib cage and diaphragm helps you breathe more deeply, sleep better, and reduce reflux.

Sleep difficulties & general tension

Pregnancy disrupts sleep in ways no pillow can fully fix. Cranial osteopathy — slow, deeply relaxing work — helps regulate the nervous system and ease the tension of carrying so much, in every sense.

Preparing the pelvis for birth

In the final weeks, gentle work on the pelvic structures (sacrum, coccyx, iliac bones) can help create more space and mobility — supporting a smoother labor. This is one of the most rewarding parts of my work.

THE TIMING

When to come see me — trimester by trimester.

First trimester (weeks 1-23)

No session during this time.

Second trimester (weeks 14-27)

The "golden trimester" and the ideal time to begin regular sessions. As your body grows, we work proactively to prevent the lower back pain, sciatica, and pelvic discomfort that often appear in the third trimester.

Third trimester (weeks 28-36)

This is when most women come to see me. Sessions focus on relieving accumulated tension, improving sleep, and gently preparing the pelvis. I see clients every 2-3 weeks during this phase.

Late pregnancy (weeks 37-40+)

Specialized preparation for birth — opening the pelvic structures, releasing diaphragm tension, supporting the nervous system. I see clients weekly if needed. House calls available across Miami-Dade.
